The increase in international trade in bulk commodities and consumer goods has led the European Union (EU) to promote the use of rail and sea transportation in order to reduce road congestion. Reducing turnaround time of ships in port is a key element of the EU’s strategy. The time, cost, labour and risks associated with traditional methods of mooring with ropes, which have otherwise remained unchanged for thousands of years, can be significantly reduced using an automatic mooring system.
